Hiking with kids is hugely rewarding, but it can be hard to gauge what trails will actually be family-friendly. Poor planning will make a fun memory instantly become torturous. 4 Family Friendly Hikes in the North Cascades for Wonderful Outdoor Memories
Blue Lake
Blue Lake is an easy hike that takes you through positively dreamy landscapes. The trail is 4.4 miles roundtrip with an elevation of 1,050 feet. You’ll journey past Liberty Bell Mountain and the Early Winter Spires, as well as forests, wildflowers, meadows, and the icy blue lake. The trail can get a little dusty during warmer months, but the scenery more than makes up for it. If your family is more advanced, keep going to the Washington Pass Lookout, only 0.8 miles away.
Cutthroat Lake
With only 400 feet of elevation, Cutthroat Lake is easily one of the best hikes around for smaller kids. The trail is a 3.8-mile roundtrip hike that is rewarding for any level of hiker. As you walk, you’ll go past a creek that feeds into Cutthroat Lake. The surrounding mountains are full of pine trees, and the landscape is transformed throughout the fall. The trail is dog-friendly, and the path includes a log footbridge crossing over the creek.
Rainy Lake
Rainy Lake demands minimal effort, considering its breathtaking views. The hike is wheelchair accessible. The roundtrip is exactly two miles long and features a mere 70 feet of elevation. Throughout your hike, you’ll see waterfalls and mountains. The namesake lake is so clear you’ll see the fish as they swim past. The trail begins at the parking lot for an added layer of convenience. Dogs are more than welcome as long as they’re leashed. During nicer weather, ensure you arrive early since the trail is a popular destination!
Lake Ann (Rainy Pass)
While Lake Ann is beautiful any time of year, it’s positively serene throughout the summer. During the warmer months, the Rainy Pass trail gives you views of ridgelines covered in wildflowers. Throughout the fall, the trail is transformed by the vibrant leaves on the mountains. The trail is a 3.4-mile round trip and features 700 feet of elevation. The trail allows dogs on leashes. While this tends to be a popular spot, the trail is paced enough to keep it from feeling overcrowded. Grab some bug spray and get ready to see some stunning mountain views!
